Discover Massee Lane Gardens

Massee Lane Gardens offers a wonderful outdoor experience. It's a perfect spot to learn about different plants and enjoy nature. The gardens are famous for their huge collection of camellias, but they have many other interesting areas too.

A Garden's Beginning

The gardens started way back in the 1930s. A man named David C. Strother created them around his farm house. His property was quite large, about 160 acres. In 1966, he gave his land to the American Camellia Society.

The society then built its main office building there. It was finished in 1968 and named after Mr. Strother. A special greenhouse, called the T. J. Smith Memorial Greenhouse, was built in 1969. It now holds about 200 camellia plants, keeping them safe and warm.

Explore the Beautiful Gardens

Today, Massee Lane Gardens is home to more than 1,000 different kinds of camellia flowers! But that's not all you'll find. The gardens have several unique sections to explore.

The Amazing Camellias

The main stars of Massee Lane are the camellias. These beautiful flowers come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. You can see so many different types here, it's like a living museum of camellias.

Japanese Garden Fun

One popular spot is the Abendroth Japanese Garden. It has a peaceful tea house and a pond filled with colorful koi fish. It's a great place to relax and enjoy a different style of gardening.

Native Plants and Roses

The Environmental Garden shows off plants that naturally grow in the southeastern United States. This helps visitors learn about local plant life. There's also the Scheibert Rose Garden, which has over 150 different kinds of roses.

More Colorful Flowers

Beyond camellias, you'll find many other lovely flowers. These include bright azaleas, cheerful chrysanthemums, sunny daffodils, sweet-smelling daphnes, and vibrant daylilies. There's always something blooming!

The Educational Museum

Inside the visitor center, you'll find the Annabelle Lundy Fetterman Educational Museum. This museum has a large collection of beautiful Boehm porcelain figures. These are detailed sculptures, often of birds and flowers. The visitor center also has a slide show about the gardens, a gift shop, and rooms for events.
