How the Show Works
The main idea of the show is a cooking contest for people who love to cook at home, but aren't professional chefs. They compete to win the "MasterChef" title and a cool kitchen makeover.
The first few episodes are like auditions. Contestants cook a dish for the judges. If the judges like it, the contestant moves on. Many chosen contestants then face more tests. Finally, 12 to 14 people are picked for the "Nivheret" (Selected Team). These are the main contestants for the season.
The "Nivheret" members compete in different cooking challenges in each episode. These challenges include the Mystery Box, the Invention Test, Dish Recreation, and Taste Challenges.
Mystery Box Challenge
In this challenge, contestants get a box full of different ingredients. They must use these ingredients to create any dish they want. They can use as many or as few ingredients as they like.
The Invention Test
The Invention Test asks contestants to create a dish with a special rule. For example, the dish might need to cost a certain amount. Or it might have to include a specific ingredient. Sometimes, they need to adapt another dish. This challenge often leads to someone being eliminated from the competition.
Dish Recreation Test
For the Dish Recreation Test, contestants have to copy a complicated dish. A guest chef usually makes the original dish. Contestants are given the recipe to help them recreate it perfectly.
Taste Challenges
In Taste Challenges, contestants taste a dish. Then, they have to name all the ingredients they can identify. They get points for each correct ingredient. The challenge ends when they make their first mistake. The contestant with the lowest score is usually eliminated.
The Judges
The judges are famous chefs and restaurant owners in Israel. They decide who stays and who goes home.
For the first season, the judges were Haim Cohen, Eyal Shani, Michal Ansky, and Rafi Adar. Eyal Shani became very famous after the first season. People loved his unique way of talking about food. Even though Haim Cohen was well-known, Eyal Shani became a symbol of the show.
In the second season, Yonatan Roshfeld joined as a new judge. He replaced Rafi Adar. Haim Cohen, Eyal Shani, and Michal Ansky stayed on the panel.
For the seventh season, Israel Aharoni, another famous Israeli chef, joined the judges. He took Yonatan Roshfeld's place.
In the tenth season, Ruti Broudo became the fifth judge. Michal Ansky also continued judging, even while she was pregnant during filming.
During the tenth season, Eyal Shani faced some criticism. This happened because of comments he made about a contestant's hometown. Some people felt his comments were unfair and called for him to be removed from the show.
Season 1 (2010)
