A Look Back: Mateare's History

Mateare was founded in 1898. This means it is as old as some of the first cities established by the Spanish in Nicaragua during the late 19th century.

In 1955, the city of Mateare experienced a series of earthquakes. These earthquakes lasted for 14 days. The strongest one, on Saturday, April 26, measured 6.0 on the Richter magnitude scale. This earthquake caused serious damage to many houses nearby. Luckily, even with the strong shaking over two weeks, no deaths or injuries were reported.
