Managua (pronounced ma-NAH-gwa) is a special area in Nicaragua, much like a state or province. It's called a department. This department is the most populated in Nicaragua, meaning more people live here than in any other department.
The capital city of this department is also named Managua. This city is super important because it's not just the capital of the Managua Department, but also the capital city of the entire country of Nicaragua!
Managua Department covers a total area of about 3,465 square kilometers (that's about 1,338 square miles). In 2021, it was estimated that over 1.5 million people lived in this department. It has two coastlines: one on the big Pacific Ocean and another on Lake Managua. However, it does not touch the famous Lake Nicaragua.
