Matiari is a city located in the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Hyderabad. You can find it right on the N-5 National Highway. Matiari is also the main city and headquarters of the Matiari District.
This area is known for its important religious and historical sites. These include the shrines (called Dargahs) of respected figures like Pir Sayed Sakhi Hashim Shah Badshah, Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Makhdoom Sarwar Nooh, and Sardar Ahmed Shah Lakiari.
Matiari is famous for its delicious ice cream and a special Sindhi cloth called Ajrak. The nearby city of Hala, which is part of Matiari District, is well-known for its beautiful handicrafts. These include Ajrak, Kashi pottery, Jandi woodwork, and detailed embroidery.
Understanding Matiari's Name
The name Matiari comes from two Sindhi words: Mat and yari. Mat means an earthen water pot, and yari means friendship. So, the name means "friendship with earthen water pots."
The Story Behind the Name
A famous scholar named G. M. Syed shared a story about how Matiari got its name. He said that a long time ago, a very kind and religious person lived here. This person loved God and used to help travelers by offering them water from a pitcher. Because of this, the village was first known as "Mat Waru Goth," which means "The Village of the Pitcher." Over time, this name changed and became Matiari.
