Matija Barl (born February 17, 1940 – died August 3, 2018) was a famous actor, producer, and translator from Slovenia. He is best known for playing the main character, Kekec, in the 1951 movie Kekec. He also started the first and most important Slovenian music festival, called Slovenska popevka, in 1962.
Early Life and the Role of Kekec
Matija Barl was born in Ljubljana, which is the capital city of Slovenia. As a child, he loved to play outdoors.
When he was 11 years old, Matija went to an audition for a movie called Kekec. More than a thousand children tried out for the role, but Matija was chosen! He got the part of Kekec, a brave and strong child who was like a superhero.
This role made him very famous. People remembered him as Kekec for the rest of his life. Because everyone thought he was so strong, other kids sometimes wanted to fight him. So, Matija decided to take classes in martial arts, like wrestling and judo, to learn how to defend himself.
Later Career and Contributions
After his acting role as Kekec, Matija Barl continued his education. He studied dramaturgy at the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana. Dramaturgy is the study of how plays and movies are made.
In 1962, Matija moved to Germany. There, he worked as an independent producer and translator. He also acted sometimes. A producer helps to organize and manage the making of films or music. A translator changes words from one language to another.
Matija Barl also made a big mark on Slovenian music. In 1962, he created and organized the first ever Slovenska popevka music festival. This festival became very important for Slovenian music. He even wrote lyrics for songs by famous Slovenian musicians.
He lived in Marezige, a town in Slovenia, until he passed away in 2018.
