Matilde Diez's Life Story
Early Start in Acting
Matilde Diez began her acting career very young. She was only twelve years old! Her first play was La huérfana de Bruxelles (The Orphan of Brussels). She performed this play at the Teatro de Cádiz.
In 1834, a theater manager named Juan Grimaldi hired her. She moved to Madrid to work. There, she had her first big success. This was with the play Clotilde, written by Federico Soulié.
Marriage and Famous Roles
In 1836, Matilde married another actor, Julián Romea. They performed many plays together. One famous theater they worked at was the Teatro Español.
They acted in plays like Gabriela de Belle-Isle. They also performed the first Spanish translation of a play by William Shakespeare. This was Macbeth, which they performed in 1838. It was a big event at the Teatro del Príncipe.
A Star on Stage
Matilde Diez became one of Spain's best actresses. She was amazing in many different shows. Some of her famous roles were in plays like Catalina Howard and The lovers of Teruel. She also starred in The duende lady and The game is on between fools.
Other popular plays included Mother's love, Storms of the heart, and The braid of her hair. She also shone in The Governess.
Travels and Later Years
Between 1853 and 1858, Matilde traveled to America. She performed in Mexico City and Havana. She was very successful there too!
In her later years, Matilde taught acting. She worked at the Madrid Conservatory of Music and Declamation. Queen Elizabeth II even honored her. The Queen named her the first "camera actress." This was a very special title.
Matilde Diez passed away in early 1883. She was buried in the cemetery of San Nicolás. Her final resting place is in a special tomb. It is in the cemetery of San Lorenzo and San José in Madrid.
