Matthew Dylan Campbell (born 21 January 1987) is a former professional Australian rules football player. He played for the North Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 2006 to 2012.
Even though he was small and light, Matt was known for being super fast. He was great at dodging other players on the field.
Matt Campbell's Early Life
Matt Campbell grew up in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. His family has Indigenous Australian heritage, specifically from the Arrernte people.
He started playing senior football in 2005 with the North Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL. He played every game for them in 2006.
Later that year, the Kangaroos (North Melbourne) chose him in the draft. This meant he moved to Melbourne to start his professional career. After the 2012 season, he left the Kangaroos. He then went back to play for North Adelaide in the SANFL in 2013.
Playing for North Melbourne
Matt Campbell made his very first AFL appearance for the Kangaroos in 2007. His first game was against Collingwood.
He didn't have a great first game, so he wasn't picked for the next one. But in his third game, he played much better! He got 12 possessions and kicked his first ever AFL goal.
Matt kept playing well. He had 13 possessions against the Brisbane Lions. In another game against Geelong, he kicked two goals. He even kicked three goals in a game against Sydney, helping his team when the game was very close.
Back to North Adelaide
After his time in the AFL, Matt returned to Adelaide. He played for his first club, North Adelaide, for three more years. He played at their home ground, Prospect Oval.
Matt Campbell officially retired from playing football at the end of the 2014 SANFL season.
