Matthew Edward Hobden (born March 27, 1993 – died January 2, 2016) was a talented English cricket player. He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler who also batted right-handed. Matt was born in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England. He went to Millfield School and Eastbourne College. Sadly, Matt passed away suddenly at the age of 22. An investigation into his death concluded in May 2016, finding no suspicious circumstances.

Matt Hobden's Cricket Journey

Starting Out in Cricket

As a young player, Matt Hobden played for Glynde & Beddingham Cricket Club. In 2009, he was part of the team that won a big national competition. This final match was played at Lord's, a very famous cricket ground.

In 2012, Matt joined the Preston Nomads Cricket Team. He helped them win the 2012 Sussex Premier League. His last game for the Nomads was in August 2015.

Playing for Cardiff MCCU

While studying Business Economics at Cardiff Metropolitan University, Matt started playing first-class cricket. This is the highest level of domestic cricket. He played for Cardiff MCCU in 2012. His first match was against Somerset.

In another match that season, he played against Warwickshire. He took five wickets in that game, which is a great achievement for a bowler. He also played club cricket for Ynysygerwn.

Joining Sussex County Cricket Club

Matt also played for the Second XI team of Sussex. Soon after, he signed a junior professional contract. He then made his List A debut for Sussex. This was in a match against Nottinghamshire.

In July 2013, Matt got a shin injury. This meant he couldn't play for the rest of the 2013 season.

Professional Career at Sussex

In May 2014, Matt signed a full professional contract with Sussex. He made his County Championship debut on June 1, 2014. After this match, Matt thanked his teammates James Anyon, Jon Lewis, and Steve Magoffin for their support. He was out of action for a long time during the 2014 season due to injury.

In April 2015, Matt scored 65 runs without being out. This was part of a record-breaking partnership with Ollie Robinson. They set a new Sussex record for the tenth-wicket partnership.

In May 2015, Matt had a tough match where he bowled many no-balls. His captain, Ed Joyce, defended him. He said Matt was a young player still learning and would be a fantastic cricketer. His coach, Mark Robinson, also supported him. He said that this experience could help Matt grow stronger as a player.

During the 2015 season, Matt took 21 wickets. His last game was a List A match against Essex in August 2015.

Matt Hobden passed away suddenly on January 2, 2016, in Forres, Scotland. He was 22 years old. The local police investigated his death. They concluded that there were no suspicious circumstances.

Sussex County Cricket Club announced his passing. They said Matt was an exciting young cricketer with a bright future. Kevin Shine, England's fast bowling coach, said Matt had huge potential. He believed Matt would have played for England.

The England Cricket Team's official Facebook page shared their sadness. England players wore black armbands during a match in South Africa to show their respect. Angus Porter, head of the Professional Cricketers' Association, called Matt a young bowler with great potential.

To honor Matt, Sussex County Cricket Club decided to retire his shirt number, 19. They also planted a tree at the County Ground in his memory.
