Matteo Sereni's Football Journey
Matteo Sereni was born in Parma, Italy. He began his football career at a club called UC Sampdoria. In 1994, he was loaned out to A.C. Crevalcore. Being "loaned out" means a player temporarily plays for another team.
After his loan, he returned to Sampdoria. He played only 10 games before moving to Piacenza Calcio in 1997. At Piacenza, he helped the team avoid relegation to Serie B. Relegation is when a team moves down to a lower division because they didn't perform well enough.
In 1998, Sereni transferred to Empoli F.C.. Unfortunately, he could not help Empoli avoid relegation that season.
Return to Sampdoria and Ipswich Town
In 1999, Sereni went back to Sampdoria, which was then in Serie B. He played in 75 out of 76 games for them in Serie B.
In 2001, an English club called Ipswich Town signed him. They paid £4.5 million for him, which was a very large amount of money for the club at that time. However, Sereni and Ipswich Town were also relegated. In 2002, he was loaned to Brescia.
Playing for Lazio
In 2003, Sereni moved to Lazio for €550,000. He joined to compete for the main goalkeeper spot with another player, Angelo Peruzzi.
In 2004, he was the starting goalkeeper for Lazio in both games of the 2004 Coppa Italia Final against Juventus FC. Lazio won this important cup! He also played in the 2005 UEFA Intertoto Cup matches, where Lazio was knocked out in the semi-finals by Olympique de Marseille.
In January 2006, Sereni was loaned to Treviso. As part of this deal, another goalkeeper, Samir Handanović, came to Lazio on loan. Sereni returned to Lazio for the 2006–07 season, but he did not play any games that year.
Time at Torino
In June 2007, Sereni joined Torino on a free transfer. A "free transfer" means no money was paid between the clubs for him. He signed a two-year contract to replace another goalkeeper, Christian Abbiati. In November 2008, he signed a new contract that lasted until June 2011.
Final Club: Brescia
On July 5, 2010, Sereni signed with Brescia Calcio again, also on a free transfer. A few days before the last game of the Serie A season, his contract was ended by agreement between him and the club. This happened after Brescia was relegated a few weeks earlier.
International Football Career
Matteo Sereni also represented his country, Italy, in international football. When he was 16, he was chosen to play for the Italy national under-17 team. He also played for the Italy national under-23 team at the 1997 Mediterranean Games. At these games, Italy won the championship!
