Book Gospel of Matthew
Christian Bible part New Testament

Matthew 2:19 is the nineteenth verse in the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. This part of the New Testament tells a story about Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus. They had to leave their home and go to Egypt to stay safe. This verse describes a special moment when an angel visits Joseph again.

The Holy Family's Journey

After Jesus was born, King Herod heard about a new "King of the Jews." He felt threatened by this news. Herod decided to try and kill Jesus. He ordered a terrible event known as the Massacre of the Innocents. This was an attempt to get rid of any potential rival.

However, an angel had already warned Joseph in a dream. The angel told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus and escape to Egypt. They quickly left their home to find safety. This journey protected Jesus from Herod's plan.

An Angel's Important Message

While Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were living in Egypt, an important event happened. King Herod, who wanted to harm Jesus, passed away. This meant the danger was gone.

In Matthew 2:19, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph once more. The angel spoke to Joseph in a dream, just like before. This time, the message was different. It was good news.

The Verse Explained

The verse tells us exactly what happened:

But when Herod was dead, behold,
an angel of the Lord appeareth
in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

This means that after King Herod died, an angel showed up to Joseph. The angel appeared to him while he was sleeping in Egypt. This dream was a clear sign that it was safe to return home. The angel's message was a signal that their time in Egypt was over. It was time for the Holy Family to go back to their own land.
