Book | Gospel of Matthew |
Christian Bible part | New Testament |
Matthew 2:4 is the fourth verse in the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. This book is part of the New Testament in the Christian Bible. In this verse, King Herod gathers important religious leaders. He wants to find out where the new "King of the Jews" was expected to be born. This happens after the Magi told Herod they had seen signs of this new king's birth.
King Herod and the Magi
This verse is part of a larger story. It begins when wise men, called the Magi, arrive in Jerusalem. They had traveled from the East, following a special star. They were looking for a newborn king. They asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?"
Why Herod Was Worried
When King Herod heard about this, he became very worried. Herod was the current king, and he didn't want anyone else to take his place. He was a powerful ruler, but he was also known for being suspicious and sometimes cruel. The idea of a new king being born made him feel threatened.
Asking for Answers
To understand more, Herod decided to call together the most important religious leaders in Jerusalem. These leaders included the chief priests and the scribes. The chief priests were high-ranking religious officials. The scribes were experts in Jewish law and traditions. Herod asked them a direct question: "Where was the Christ (or Messiah) supposed to be born?" He wanted to know the exact place. He hoped this information would help him find the new king.
