Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Colonel Matthew Hore (died 1696) was an important Irish leader. He was a soldier and a politician who supported two different groups in Ireland's history: the Confederates and the Jacobites.

Hore was the son of John Hore and Mary Wadding. His family lived in Shandon, which is in County Waterford.

Early Life and the Confederates

Matthew Hore became involved in Irish politics and fighting from a young age. In 1642, he went to the Confederate General Assembly in Kilkenny. This was a meeting of Irish Catholic leaders who wanted to protect their rights and religion.

Hore fought as a soldier for the Confederates during the Irish Confederate Wars. These wars were a big conflict in Ireland during the mid-1600s. After these wars, a leader named Oliver Cromwell took control of Ireland. Matthew Hore lost his family lands because of this.

Getting His Lands Back

Later, when the Stuart kings returned to power in England, things changed for Matthew Hore. He got his lands back, which was a lot of property – about 4,287 acres! This happened because of a special law called the Act of Settlement 1662. In 1671, he was also made a justice of the peace for County Waterford. This meant he helped keep law and order in his area.

Role in the Williamite War

Matthew Hore continued his military career. During the Williamite War in Ireland, he became a captain and then a lieutenant colonel in a group of soldiers led by Richard Grace. This war was another big conflict in Ireland, fought between supporters of King James II and King William III.

A Member of Parliament

In 1689, Matthew Hore was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for County Waterford. He was part of a special meeting of Parliament called the Patriot Parliament. This Parliament was called by King James II of England when he was trying to get his throne back.

In 1691, Matthew Hore faced serious legal trouble. He was accused of going against the new government. He passed away in 1696. Matthew Hore had two sons, John Hore and Martin Hore, who also became politicians in Dungarvan and supported the Jacobite cause.
