Matthew Waterhouse was born on December 19, 1961. He is an actor and writer from England. He is best known for playing the character Adric in the famous BBC science fiction TV show Doctor Who. He was part of the show from 1980 to 1982.

Early Life and School

Matthew Waterhouse was born in Hertford, England. He grew up in Haywards Heath, Sussex. He went to St. Wilfrid's Primary School. Later, he attended Shoreham Grammar School. When he was younger, Matthew was a huge fan of Doctor Who. He even said he was "obsessed" with the show!

Matthew Waterhouse in Doctor Who

Matthew Waterhouse played Adric, a friend of the Doctor. He worked with both Tom Baker and Peter Davison's Doctors. Matthew was the youngest actor to ever play a companion on Doctor Who. This was only his second acting job. Before Doctor Who, he played a schoolboy in a BBC2 show called To Serve Them All My Days. He found out he got the role of Adric just before filming that show.

Audio Adventures and DVDs

Matthew has helped with many Doctor Who projects. He recorded audio commentaries for DVD releases of episodes like Earthshock (2003) and The Visitation (2004). He also talked about his time on the show in a special video called The Boy With the Golden Star. This video is on the Warriors' Gate DVD.

He has read audiobooks for the BBC. These include The Visitation and Full Circle. In 2013, Big Finish Productions announced he would return as Adric for new audio plays. These stories started in 2014. He has also performed in other audio stories called Short Trips. One of these, A Full Life, won an award.

In 2013, Matthew appeared in a special comedy show. It was called The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. This show celebrated the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. In 2016, he visited places where the episode Black Orchid was filmed. He did this for an interview DVD.

Other Acting Roles

After it was announced he would play Adric, Matthew appeared on several TV shows. These included Saturday Night at the Mill and Top of the Pops. He also appeared on Peter Davison's This Is Your Life. He was also on Children in Need with other Doctor Who actors.

Matthew has only been in one movie. It was a science fiction thriller from 1986 called The Killing Edge. He had a small role as a knife man.

In 1996, he made a pilot drama called Ghostlands. He played a character named Tom. He acted alongside Sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor.

Theatre Work

Matthew has performed in many plays in the UK. He has acted in plays by William Shakespeare. These include A Midsummer Night's Dream (as Puck) and Hamlet (as Hamlet). He also appeared in plays like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Peter Pan.

He also wrote and performed his own one-man show. It was called Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This show toured around the UK.

Matthew has also appeared in audio stories for Dark Shadows. He played John Cunningham in The Creeping Fog. He also played Andrew Cunningham in Bloodlust.

Matthew Waterhouse as a Writer

In 2006, Matthew Waterhouse published his first novel. It was called Fates, Flowers: A Comedy of New York. This book was re-released in 2010. He also released two other books that year. They were Vanitas: A Comedy of New York and his memoir, Blue Box Boy. A memoir is a book about someone's own life. In 2013, he released a third book called Precious Liars. All four of his books have been republished. He also released a collection of short stories called Sugar in 2016. Matthew has recorded audiobook versions of all his books.

He also wrote an audio story for Dark Shadows called Old Acquaintance. He has written two Doctor Who Audio Novels. These are Watchers and Prisoners of London.

Personal Life

Matthew Waterhouse lived in Greenwich, Connecticut in the United States for many years. He lived there from 1998 until 2016. During that time, he often visited the UK. He has now moved back to live full-time in the UK with his husband.
