Matthias Sention Jr. (born November 20, 1628 – died December 1728) was an important person in the early history of Norwalk, Connecticut. He was one of the first people to settle there. His name was also spelled Sension and later St. John.

Early Life and Family

Matthias Sention Jr. was born in England, in a place called New Windsor, Berkshire. His parents were Matthias Sention Sr. and Mary Tinker.

Helping Norwalk Grow

Matthias Sention Jr. was a leader in the new settlement of Norwalk. He served as a "selectman," which was like a town council member. Selectmen helped manage the town's daily business. His home was located at lot number 25, close to the water.

Running an Inn

In 1678, the town asked Matthias to open an inn at his home. An inn was a place where travelers could stay and eat. It was important for "entertaining strangers" who visited Norwalk.

Town Duties

Matthias also helped the town in other ways. For example, on December 30, 1701, he was paid for beating the drum. This was likely a way to announce important news or gather people for town meetings.

Norwalk Founder

Matthias Sention Jr. is honored as one of the original founders of Norwalk. His name is carved on the Founders Stone. This special stone is located in the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery. It lists the names of the first settlers who helped create the town.
