Mattias Jonson's Club Career
Starting His Football Journey
Mattias Jonson was born in Kumla, Sweden. He began playing football in youth teams for IFK Kumla and Karlslunds IF.
In 1992, he joined Örebro SK, where he made his first appearance as a senior player. This was in the top Swedish football league called Allsvenskan. Later, in 1996, he moved to another team in the same league, Helsingborgs IF. With Helsingborg, he helped them win the 1999 Allsvenskan championship. He left the club after that successful 1999 season.
Playing in Denmark with Brøndby
After leaving Sweden, Mattias moved to Denmark to play for Brøndby IF in the Danish Superliga. The new manager, Åge Hareide, brought him to the team. Mattias first played as a striker, a player who focuses on scoring goals. Later, he settled into his usual role as a left-sided winger.
He showed his great ability to score goals many times for Brøndby. For example, in a UEFA Cup game in 2002, Brøndby had lost their first match. In the second game, Mattias scored three goals, which is called a hat-trick. This helped Brøndby win the game 5–0 and move forward in the tournament. He also scored another hat-trick in a league game in April 2002. That season, he helped Brøndby win the 2001–02 Superliga championship.
In the 2002–03 Superliga season, Mattias was Brøndby's top scorer in the league with 11 goals. He also helped the team win the Danish Cup trophy in 2003.
Time in England with Norwich City
After the 2004 European Championship, Mattias decided to leave Brøndby. In August 2004, he moved to England and joined Norwich City. This team had just been promoted to the Premier League, which is the top football league in England.
He transferred from Brøndby for a fee that was thought to be around £850,000. However, he found it difficult to make a big impact in the Premier League. He left Norwich City after playing there for just one season.
Coming Back to Sweden
In 2005, Mattias returned to Sweden to play for Djurgårdens IF. In his very first season with Djurgården, he helped the team achieve something special called "the Double". This means they won both the 2005 Allsvenskan league title and the Svenska Cupen (Swedish Cup) trophy in the same year.
He ended his career after the 2011 season. His very last game was played on October 23, 2011.
