Mattson, also known as Earnest, is a small place in Coahoma County, Mississippi, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Mattson is located close to U.S. Route 49.
Mattson is about 8 miles (13 km) south of Clarksdale. It is also about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Dublin.
History of Mattson
Mattson got its name from a family who lived in the area. This family owned a large sawmill, which is a place where wood is cut into planks.
Mattson was once an important stop for the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. This was a railway line that helped transport goods and people.
A post office first opened here in 1887 under the name Earnest. It changed its name to Mattson in 1897. There was also a drug store in Mattson, run by T. R. Montgomery.
