Maud Marian Wear (born December 8, 1873 – died 1955) was a talented British artist. She was famous for her paintings and for creating tiny, detailed portraits called miniatures.
Early Life and Education
Maud Wear was born in London, England, in 1873. Her mother was from London, and her father was a wine merchant's clerk from Yorkshire. Later, her father became a newspaper writer.
Maud grew up in an area of London called Hackney. She received her early education at home. In 1896, she began studying art at the Royal Academy Schools. This was a very important art school in London.
Maud studied at the Royal Academy Schools for five years. During her time there, she won a special award. She received a silver medal for one of her paintings. This painting showed a draped figure, meaning a person covered in cloth.
Art Career and Exhibitions
After finishing her studies, Maud Wear became a teacher. She taught art at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts. At the same time, she also worked as a professional artist.
Maud was well-known for her portraits, which are paintings of people. She also created many figure studies, which are drawings or paintings of the human body. She showed her artwork in many important exhibitions.
She displayed a total of 45 paintings at the famous Royal Academy in London. Her art was also shown at other major places, including:
