Mauensee is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Sursee area of the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland. It is known for its beautiful lake, Lake Mauensee.
History
Mauensee was first mentioned in old records around the year 1190. Back then, it was known by the name Moginse.
Geography
Mauensee covers an area of about 7.2 square kilometers (2.8 square miles). A large part of this land, about 68.5%, is used for farming. This means there are many fields and pastures.
About 17.2% of the area is covered by forests. The rest of the land is used for buildings and roads (6.8%), or it's non-productive land like rivers and lakes (7.5%). In 1997, about 17.15% of the land was forest.
Most of the farming land (64.85%) is used for crops or grazing animals. A small part (3.63%) is used for fruit trees or vineyards.
The town is located right next to Lake Mauensee. Besides the main village of Mauensee, there are also smaller communities called hamlets, like Bognau and Kaltbach. There are also houses built along the lake.

As of 2007, Mauensee had a population of 1,126 people. About 7.5% of these people were from other countries. Over the past 10 years, the number of people living here has grown by about 20.2%.
Most people in Mauensee (96.1%) speak German. Albanian and Serbo-Croatian are the next most common languages, each spoken by about 1% of the population.
In the 2007 election, the most popular political party was the CVP, which received 28.4% of the votes. Other popular parties were the FDP (26.1%), the SVP (22.2%), and the Green Party (11%).
The people in Mauensee are generally well-educated. About 78.5% of adults (aged 25–64) have finished high school or gone on to higher education, like a university.
