Wauwil is a small town, also known as a municipality. It is located in the Willisau district of the Lucerne canton in Switzerland.

Wauwil covers an area of about 2.9 square kilometers (1.1 square miles). Most of this land, about 72%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 10% of the area. The remaining 18% has buildings, roads, and other developed areas.

In the past, about 10% of Wauwil's land was covered by forests. Most of the farming land is used for crops or pastures. A small part is used for growing fruit. The developed areas include buildings, industrial zones, and transportation routes. There are also parks and green spaces.

Wauwil has a very old history. An ancient lakeside village called Wauwilermoos is a very important Swiss heritage site. This site is also known as Egolzwil 3. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site called Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps. This UNESCO site includes 56 similar ancient villages across Switzerland.

During World War II, there was a special camp in Wauwilermoos. It held soldiers from Allied countries who had escaped from other camps in Switzerland. After the war, in 1947, this camp became a place where people served their sentences. In the early 1980s, it was rebuilt into a modern facility. Today, it is a place where people serve their sentences and also a center for people who are being deported.
