History of Egolzwil
Egolzwil was first mentioned in old writings around the year 1160. Back then, it was called Eigoltiswile.
During World War II, there was a prison camp nearby called Wauwilermoos. Allied soldiers who had escaped from other Swiss internment camps were held there.

Egolzwil is home to a very important ancient site called the Wauwilermoos pile dwelling settlement. This site is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
The Egolzwil 3 settlement is part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps. This is a group of ancient settlements that are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means they are very important to the world's history.
Egolzwil 3 is thought to be the oldest settlement of its kind in Switzerland. Scientists believe the wooden parts of the settlement date back to around 4300 BC.
Archaeologists have studied the site many times. They found that the settlement was lived in for only about six years. It had rows of houses with floors made of bark. They also found many tools made from ceramic, stone, flint, and animal antlers. These tools included pots, jugs, and cups.
