The Maullín River (which means Río Maullín in Spanish) is a river found in Chile. It is located in the Los Lagos Region, which is a part of southern Chile. This river starts its journey from Llanquihue Lake, flowing out of it.

The Maullín River generally flows towards the southwest. Along its path, it goes over several small waterfalls. Finally, it empties into the Pacific Ocean, specifically into an area called the Gulf of Coronados. The part of the river closer to the ocean is a tidal estuary. This means it's where the river's fresh water mixes with the ocean's salty water, and the water level changes with the tides.

Amazing Wetlands

The areas around the Maullín River are known for their wetlands. These wetlands are very special because they are home to many different kinds of water birds. Compared to other places along the Chilean coast, the Maullín wetlands have a great variety of bird species.

One particular spot in the estuary, called Laguna Quenuir, is famous for having the largest number of different bird species. It's like a big bird paradise!

River History

The Maullín River has an interesting history. In 1780, a Franciscan Friar named Francisco Alvarez Villanueva wrote about it. He mentioned that the Maullín River was the border between the lands controlled by the Spanish and the territory of the Cunco people to the north.

Later, in the mid-1800s, the river was explored more fully. Officers from the Chilean Navy, Francisco Hudson and Francisco Vidal Gormaz, explored the river in 1856 and 1857. They helped map and understand this important waterway.

Around the same time, in the second half of the 19th century, people started settling near Llanquihue Lake. Many German immigrants moved to this area. The Chilean government gave them land to encourage more people to live and develop this part of the country.
