Maurice Broaddus's Life Story

Maurice Broaddus was born in London, United Kingdom. He grew up in Indianapolis, United States. His mom is from Jamaica, and many of his family members still live there.

He went to Purdue University and earned a science degree. For twenty years, he worked studying how chemicals affect living things. He also helped people who needed homes or jobs. Today, he works as a teacher librarian at The Oaks Academy Middle School. He also helps at the Kheprw Institute. This group helps young people become leaders and improve their neighborhoods.

Maurice Broaddus still lives in Indianapolis with his wife and two sons.

Maurice Broaddus's Writing Adventures

Maurice Broaddus has written many short stories and essays. His stories have appeared in popular magazines like Asimov's Science Fiction and Fantasy & Science Fiction. He has also contributed to collections like Black Panther: Tales of Wakanda.

In 2010, he published King Maker. This urban fantasy novel retells the old stories of King Arthur, but with street gangs. People really liked it, and he wrote two more books in the series: King's Justice and King’s War. All three books were later put together in one big book called The Knights of Breton Court.

His steampunk story, Buffalo Soldier, came out in 2017. Steampunk stories mix old-fashioned machines with futuristic technology. This book was called "exciting" by the New York Times Book Review. It tells a story about an alternate American history.

In 2019, Maurice Broaddus started a new Afrofuturist space series called Astra Black. Afrofuturism mixes African culture with science fiction and fantasy. The first book in this series, Sweep of Stars, was released in 2022. His 2020 story, Sorcerers, is about a sorcerer inspired by hip hop music. This story is even being made into a TV show!

Maurice Broaddus as an Editor

Maurice Broaddus also helps other writers by editing books and magazines. He co-edited Dark Faith, a collection of stories about horror and religious faith. He also helped edit special issues of Fantasy and Nightmare magazines. These issues were called "People of Colo(u)r Destroy Fantasy" and "People of Colo(u)r Destroy Horror". They focused on sharing stories from diverse writers.

He also works as an editor for Apex Magazine.

In 2020, he was a guest editor for Fireside Magazine. He worked on a special issue about dealing with sadness and loss. One story he picked was about how the hip-hop group Outkast used music to imagine the future for Black people in the South. The magazine later released an audio version of this story. However, the voice actor chosen for the audio did not match the author's background. This caused a lot of upset. The audio version was quickly removed, and the publisher apologized to both the author and Maurice Broaddus.
