About Maurice FitzGerald

Early Life and Family

Maurice FitzGerald was born at Kilkea Castle. He went to school at Eton College. He never married during his life.

Maurice became the Duke of Leinster when his father passed away in 1893. His father was 42 years old. His mother passed away two years later in 1895. She was 30 years old.

Maurice had three brothers and sisters:

  • A sister who was born in 1885 and passed away in 1886.
  • Lord Desmond FitzGerald (1888–1916).
  • Edward FitzGerald, 7th Duke of Leinster (1892–1976). He later became the 7th Duke.

Family Estates

While Maurice was still young, his family's large lands were sold. These lands were in County Kildare, Ireland. In November 1903, his family's helpers sold the lands. They sold them to 506 tenant farmers.

Some of these lands had been owned by the family for a very long time. Their ownership dated back to the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1171. The family sold about 45,000 acres of land. This was a very large amount of land.

Later Life and Health

From a young age, Maurice was reported to have delicate health. Just before his 21st birthday in 1908, a newspaper mentioned he was not well known. This was because he had to live a very careful life.

At that time, the young Duke was staying at Craig House Hospital. This was a special hospital in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He lived there from 1907 until he passed away in 1922. He had his own small house there. He even had a butler to help him.

From 1908 until his death, John Donald Pollock was his personal doctor. He was also a trusted friend to Maurice.
