Maurice Riordan (born in 1953) is an Irish poet, translator, and editor. He is known for his thoughtful poetry and for helping other writers.

Early Life and Education

Maurice Riordan was born in 1953 in a place called Lisgoold in County Cork, Ireland. He went to school at St. Colman's College in Fermoy. Later, he studied at University College Cork in Ireland. He also studied at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

His Poetry Collections

Maurice Riordan has written several books of poetry. These collections often explore different themes and ideas.

A Word from the Loki

His first major collection was A Word from the Loki, published in 1995. Many of the poems in this book are about London, where he lives. This book was chosen by the Poetry Book Society. It was also considered for a big award called the T. S. Eliot Prize.

Floods and The Holy Land

In 2000, he released Floods. This book was also recognized for an award, the Whitbread Poetry Award. Later, in 2007, he published The Holy Land. This collection includes a special type of poem called idylls or prose poems. These are like short stories written with poetic language. The Holy Land won the Michael Hartnett Award.

Working with Words

Besides writing his own poems, Maurice Riordan has done many other things with words.

Editor and Translator

He has worked as an editor for different poetry magazines. From 2005 to 2009, he was the Poetry Editor for Poetry London. Then, from 2013 to 2017, he was the Editor of The Poetry Review. This means he helped choose which poems would be published in these magazines. He also helps translate books from other languages into English.

Writing for Young Readers

Maurice Riordan has even written a book for children! It is called The Moon Has Written You a Poem. This book was adapted from a Portuguese story by José Jorge Letria.

Teaching Poetry

Maurice Riordan has also shared his knowledge by teaching. He has taught poetry at Goldsmiths College and Imperial College. He is now an Emeritus Professor of Poetry at Sheffield Hallam University. This means he is a retired professor who is still highly respected. Today, he lives in London.
