Club Career
Mauro Esposito was born in Torre del Greco, Italy. He started his professional football career in 1997 with Pescara Calcio. Before that, he even had a tryout with the English club Everton. He played for Pescara in Italy's second division, called Serie B, for two seasons.
After a tryout with Rangers that didn't work out, he joined Udinese Calcio. With Udinese, he played his first games in Italy's top league, Serie A. He only played nine league games over two years and was also loaned back to Pescara for a short time.
In the 2001–02 season, Esposito moved to Cagliari Calcio, a team in Serie B. He became a very important player for Cagliari. During his six years there, he scored more than ten goals in three different seasons. In the 2003–04 season, he scored his career-best of 17 goals in 40 matches. His team finished second that year and moved up to Serie A after five years away.
In July 2007, A.S. Roma bought part of Esposito's player rights. He signed a three-year contract with them. In June 2008, Roma fully bought Esposito. However, he didn't play much for Roma. All his league games were in the 2007–08 season. In September 2008, he was loaned to A.C. Chievo Verona, another Serie B team.
In February 2010, Esposito was loaned again, this time to U.S. Grosseto FC, also in Serie B. His contract with Roma ended in June. In September, he signed with Atletico Roma F.C. in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione, which is a lower league. In the summer of 2011, his club was closed down. Mauro Esposito then retired from football at the age of 32.
International Career
On October 9, 2004, Esposito played his first game for the Italian national team. This was a qualifying match for the 2006 FIFA World Cup against Slovenia. Italy lost the game 0–1. Later, the coach Marcello Lippi called him for a training camp before the World Cup. However, Esposito did not make it into the final team for the World Cup.
On August 16, 2006, the new coach Roberto Donadoni chose Esposito for a friendly game against Croatia. He started in the game, which Italy lost 0–2 at home. This was his last game playing for the Italian national team.
