Mauro Ramos de Oliveira (born August 30, 1930 – died September 18, 2002) was a famous Brazilian professional football player. People often called him Mauro Ramos or just Mauro. He played as a central defender for important clubs like São Paulo FC and Santos FC. He also played for the Brazil national team.
Mauro is considered one of the best Brazilian central defenders ever. He was known for being great at heading the ball and making strong tackles. An Italian sports journalist named Gianni Brera even said Mauro was the best sweeper in football history. A sweeper is a defender who plays behind the main defensive line, ready to "sweep up" any loose balls or cover for teammates.

Early Life and Club Journey
Mauro was born in Poços de Caldas, a city in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He started playing football for amateur clubs in his hometown during the 1940s. One of his first notable teams was Caldense.
Playing for São Paulo
In 1948, Mauro joined São Paulo FC from another club called Sanjoanense. He quickly became a regular player, taking the spot of a club legend named Armando Renganeschi. Mauro played 489 matches for São Paulo FC and scored two goals.
Joining Santos and "Os Santásticos"
Before the 1960 season, Mauro moved to Santos FC. This was a big move, costing five million Brazilian cruzeiros at the time. At Santos, he continued to be a first-choice player. He was part of a legendary team known as Os Santásticos. This team was famous for its amazing players and winning many titles.
In 1967, Mauro played outside Brazil for the first time. He joined a Mexican team called Toluca. He stopped playing football the next year, at age 38, because of a groin injury.
International Success with Brazil
Mauro played 28 games for the Brazil national team. He was part of the Brazil squad for the 1954 World Cup, but he did not play in any matches.
World Cup Wins
Mauro was also part of the team that won the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, though he didn't play in that tournament either. However, at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, he finally got his chance to shine. He made his World Cup debut and was the team captain. Mauro had the honor of lifting the World Cup Trophy after Brazil won the final against Czechoslovakia. This was a huge moment in his career.
Life After Playing: Becoming a Manager
After his playing career, Mauro became a football manager. He started at a club called C.D. Oro. In 1971, he became the manager of Santos FC, the club where he had played for many years. He left Santos the following year. Mauro also managed Coritiba in 1971 and again in 1984.
