Mawgan Porth (which means "St. Mawgan's cove" in Cornish, or sometimes "cove of the Gluvian River") is a lovely beach and a small village in northern Cornwall, England. It's located north of Watergate Bay, about four miles (6 km) north of Newquay, right on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Recently, some famous people have bought homes here. Because of this, Mawgan Porth has even been called "Hollywood-on-Sea"!

This small village is part of the area called Mawgan-in-Pydar. It sits where the River Menalhyl meets the sea. Mawgan Porth has a pub, a general store, and several places to stay like hotels and caravan parks.

It's a very popular spot for surfing! The South West Coast Path, a famous walking trail, goes right behind the beach. Many people come here for their holidays.

There are a few holiday parks in Mawgan Porth. The oldest one is Magic Cove Touring Park. Cosy Corner is the closest to the beach, and then there's Sun Haven Valley Holiday Park.

A Look at History

Archaeologists are like history detectives. Between 1949 and 1974, they dug up some amazing things at Mawgan Porth. They found an old settlement with three groups of buildings. These buildings were like "courtyard houses." They also found a burial ground. These discoveries date back to around 850 to 1050 AD. Among the finds were old pottery and stone tools.

The name of Mawgan Porth has changed over time. In 1334, it was called Porthglyvyan. This Cornish name means "cove of the little wooded valley river." Later, in 1755, it became known as Porthmaugan, which means "cove of St Mawgan."

A German sculptor named Faust Lang lived in Mawgan Porth for many years. He lived there from 1936 to 1949.
