Max Berg: A Master Architect
Max Berg was born in Stettin, which is now called Szczecin in Poland. It was part of the German Empire back then. He went to the Technical University in Charlottenburg to study architecture. There, he learned from teachers like Carl Schäfer, who loved Gothic architecture. He also learned from Franz Adickes, an important city planner.
Designing the Centennial Hall
In 1909, Max Berg became a senior building official in Breslau. This city is now known as Wrocław, Poland. His most famous building is the Centennial Hall. It was built between 1911 and 1913. This hall was part of a big celebration. It marked 100 years since the 1813 War of Liberation against Napoleon Bonaparte.
The Centennial Hall is a very important early example of buildings made with reinforced concrete. This means concrete with steel bars inside to make it stronger. The hall survived World War II. In 2006, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's a special place recognized for its importance to the world.
Other Projects and Later Life
Max Berg also designed other buildings in Wrocław. He created a market hall with huge concrete arches. It looked traditional from the outside. He also designed a large office building in the main market square.
In 1925, Max Berg retired from his work as an architect. He then moved to Berlin and later to Baden-Baden. He passed away in 1947 when he was 76 years old.
