Max Jakobson (born September 30, 1923 – died March 9, 2013) was an important person from Finland. He was a diplomat, which means he represented his country in talks with other countries. He was also a journalist, someone who writes for newspapers or news programs. Max Jakobson was very important in helping Finland stay neutral during the Cold War. This meant Finland did not take sides with either the United States or the Soviet Union.

Max Jakobson was born in 1923 in a city called Viipuri, which was then in Finland. Today, this city is called Vyborg and is in Russia. His father was a tailor, and his mother was Finnish. Max started his career as a journalist. He even worked for the BBC, a famous news organization in the United Kingdom.

Becoming a Diplomat

From 1953 to 1974, Max Jakobson worked for Finland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs. This is like the government department that handles relationships with other countries. He became Finland's ambassador to the United Nations from 1965 to 1971. The United Nations is a big organization where countries work together for peace. Later, he was Finland's ambassador to Sweden from 1971 to 1974.

Running for UN Secretary-General

In 1971, Max Jakobson tried to become the United Nations Secretary-General. This is the main leader of the United Nations. He was one of the top candidates. He received enough votes from many countries. However, the Soviet Union used its veto power. This meant they could stop his election, and he did not get the job.

Later Life and Writings

Max Jakobson was very active in talking about Finnish politics. He wrote many books and articles. These writings were about Finland's political history and what was happening in politics at the time. He also led a group called the Estonian International Commission for Investigation of Crimes Against Humanity. This group looked into serious historical events that happened in Estonia.
