Max Miller is an American YouTuber and cook. He is famous for creating and hosting Tasting History. This web show mixes cooking and history. Max recreates old or historical recipes and shares the interesting stories behind them.

Early Life and Learning

Max Miller grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. He loved history from a young age. When he was six or seven, he started reading about Charles Cornwallis. He learned about the Siege of Yorktown which ended the American Revolutionary War in 1781. He even wrote a report about it just for fun!

Later, Max went to Arizona State University. He earned a degree in classical music. After college, he moved to New York City to train for Broadway theatre.

Max Miller's Career Journey

Max moved from New York City to Los Angeles to try voice acting. He got a job at Walt Disney Studios in marketing. Later, he moved into film distribution.

How Tasting History Began

In 2015, Max and a friend went on vacation to Walt Disney World. His friend got sick, so they spent most of their time in the hotel. During this time, his friend showed Max The Great British Bake Off. Max had not been very interested in cooking before this. He had little experience in the kitchen. But the show, with its mix of history and baking, really inspired him. After watching, he started cooking on his own. His first bake was a Battenberg cake.

Max began bringing his baked goods to work. He would give short talks about the history of each dish. One of his coworkers suggested he make videos about it. So, on December 23, 2019, he created the Tasting History YouTube channel.

Growing the YouTube Channel

In 2020, Max was put on furlough from Disney because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This gave him more time to work on his channel. He stayed in his upstairs area so he wouldn't disturb his fiancé, who was still working. Max started making videos and uploaded the first Tasting History episode in February 2020. He kept making videos throughout the pandemic.

Max does a lot of research for the recipes in his videos. He tries to use old cookbooks whenever possible. If not, he looks at other sources like old newspapers or written accounts. This depends on the time period and place each recipe comes from. Max says he is not a historian. This gives him more freedom to focus on the fun stories behind foods. Some recipes he only makes for the show. Others he enjoys so much that he adds them to his regular cooking. He thinks it's fun for viewers to decide which recipes they want to try.

Tasting History became very popular. It reached 500,000 subscribers on YouTube in January 2021. When Disney asked him to come back to his job, Max decided to quit. He wanted to focus on his YouTube channel full-time.

Books and TV Shows

In February 2021, Simon & Schuster announced they would publish a cookbook by Max Miller. The book is called Tasting History: Explore the Past Through 4,000 Years of Recipes. It came out in April 2023. The book appeared on The New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

In 2024, Max started co-hosting a cooking show on the Roku Channel. It's called Clash of the Cookbooks. He hosts it with Phoebe Robinson. The show features contestants who compete to cook dishes from different historical cookbooks.
