Max Miller (born March 30, 1983) is an American YouTuber and cook. He is famous for creating and hosting Tasting History. This web-show mixes cooking and history. Max recreates old or historical recipes. He also explains the interesting stories behind them.

Max Miller's Early Life

Max Miller grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. He loved history from a young age. When he was six or seven, he read about Charles Cornwallis. He learned about the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. This battle ended the American Revolutionary War. Max even wrote a report about it for fun.

He later went to Arizona State University. There, he earned a degree in classical music. After college, he moved to New York City. He trained there to perform in Broadway theatre shows.

Max Miller's Career Journey

Max Miller moved from New York City to Los Angeles. He wanted to try voice acting. He got a job at Walt Disney Studios in marketing. Later, he worked in film distribution.

Discovering a Love for Cooking

In 2015, Max and a friend visited Walt Disney World. His friend became sick during the trip. They spent most of their time in the hotel. There, his friend showed Max The Great British Bake Off. Max had not been interested in cooking before. He had very little experience with it. But the show inspired him. He loved how it combined history with baking. After watching, he started cooking on his own. His first historical bake was a Battenberg cake.

Max began bringing his baked goods to work. He would give short talks about the history of each dish. A coworker suggested he make videos about it. On December 23, 2019, he created the Tasting History channel.

Starting Tasting History

In 2020, Max was temporarily out of work from Disney. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He decided to spend more time on his YouTube channel. He worked from his upstairs area. This way, he would not disturb his fiancé, who was still working. He started making videos. The first episode of Tasting History went live in February 2020. He continued making videos throughout the pandemic.

Researching Historical Recipes

Max researches the recipes for his videos very carefully. He uses old cookbooks whenever possible. He also finds information in newspapers and other written records. This depends on the time period and place of each recipe. Max explains that he is not a professional historian. This gives him freedom to focus on the fun stories of foods. He doesn't have to stick to strict academic history. Some recipes he only makes for the show. Others he now includes in his regular cooking. He thinks it's fun for viewers to decide what they want to try making.

Growing Popularity and New Projects

Tasting History became very popular. It reached 500,000 subscribers on YouTube by January 2021. In April 2021, Disney offered Max his job back. But he decided to leave Disney instead. He chose to focus on his YouTube channel full-time.

In February 2021, Simon & Schuster announced a cookbook by Max Miller. The book is called Tasting History: Explore the Past Through 4,000 Years of Recipes. It was released in April 2023. The book appeared on The New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. In 2024, Max started co-hosting a cooking show. It's on the Roku Channel and is called Clash of the Cookbooks. He hosts it with Phoebe Robinson. The show features contestants who cook dishes from different historical cookbooks.
