Max Tonetto (born 18 November 1974) is a retired Italian football player. He mostly played as a midfielder, especially on the left side of the field. He could also play as a left-back or a left wing-back. Max Tonetto played for many Italian clubs during his career. He is best known for his time with Roma, where he helped the team win the Coppa Italia (an important Italian cup) two times in a row, in 2007 and 2008. He played for Roma for four seasons.
Playing for Clubs
Max Tonetto was born in Trieste, Italy. In the year 2000, his career changed when he joined Lecce. He played very well there and became the team's captain in 2003.
From 2004 to 2006, he played for Sampdoria, a team in Italy's top league, Serie A. While at Sampdoria, he got to play in European football for the first time in the UEFA Cup. After his contract with Sampdoria ended, he signed a two-year deal to play for Roma. Max Tonetto played in over 300 Serie A games during his career.
In his first season with Roma, he played very well as a left-back. Even though he was in his thirties, Tonetto continued to have strong performances for the team.
Max Tonetto scored his first goal for A.S. Roma during a game against Empoli in the 2007–08 season. He scored a great goal after getting a pass from Francesco Totti, a famous Roma player.
In November 2007, he signed a new contract with Roma. This contract meant he would stay with the team until June 30, 2010.
On March 11, 2009, Roma was playing against Arsenal in the Champions League. The game went to a penalty shootout. Max Tonetto took Roma's eighth and final penalty, but he missed it. Because of this, Roma was knocked out of the Champions League.
His contract with Roma ended on June 30, 2010. After that, he decided to stop playing professional football.
Playing for Italy
Max Tonetto played one game for the Italian national team. This happened in 2007 against the Faroe Islands. It was a game to qualify for the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament.
