May is a small, quiet community in Lemhi County, Idaho, in the United States. It's not a big city or town, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. May is located about 39 kilometers (24 miles) south of Salmon, close to the Pahsimeroi River. It even has its own post office that serves the area with ZIP code 83253.

History of May

May got its name from the wife of Rudolph Wright. He was the person who set up the first post office here in 1897. For a while, some small shops and businesses were open on the main street. They served people traveling through the area. However, a new road was built that went around the town. This meant fewer cars passed through, and the businesses eventually closed. Today, those buildings are no longer used.

Patterson Elementary School is located southeast of May. It serves the children living in the community. There's also a small airport called May Airport. It's an unattended airstrip with a grass runway northeast of town. This airport has been active since 1950. In 1960, about 60 people lived in May.

Weather in May

The weather in May, Idaho, changes a lot throughout the year. This type of weather is called a "climatic region." Summers are usually warm to hot, and sometimes they can be humid. Winters are cold, and they can even be very cold.

Scientists use something called the Köppen Climate Classification system to describe climates. According to this system, May has a "humid continental climate." This is often shown as "Dfb" on climate maps. It means the area has big differences in temperature between summer and winter.
