Mabel "May" Grigg (1885–1969) was an important Australian painter. She was known for her amazing portraits. May Grigg won the Alexander Melrose Prize for portraiture twice. She won it in both 1921 and 1922.

May Grigg was born in 1885. Her birthplace was Hindmarsh, South Australia. She was the third of five daughters. Her mother was Rachel Grigg. Her father was Thomas Grigg. He was a famous violinist, conductor, and music teacher.

Her Art Education

May Grigg loved art from a young age. She studied at the South Australian School of Design. This school was located in Adelaide. She learned from some great teachers there. Two of her teachers were Harry Gill and Hans Heysen. These teachers helped her become a skilled artist.

May Grigg's Career

May Grigg was not just a painter. She was also a dedicated teacher. She worked as a senior art mistress. She taught at the Ballarat Technical Art School. She also taught at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts.

May Grigg was also a leader in the art community. She was a council member. This was for the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. This shows how respected she was in the art world.

Later Life

May Grigg passed away in 1969. She died in Adelaide, Australia. Her sister, Etta Grigg, was also talented. Etta was a very good viola player.
