Maya Lawrence (born in 1980) is an American fencer. She was part of the United States Fencing Team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. There, she competed in both individual and team épée events. She won a bronze medal in the women's team épée. Her teammates were Courtney Hurley, Kelley Hurley, and Susie Scanlan.
Early Life and Fencing Beginnings
Lawrence grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. She went to Teaneck High School. She started fencing there when she was a sophomore. This means she began in her second year of high school. She graduated in 1998.
Her parents were also involved in sports. Her mother, Pat Lawrence, was the fencing coach at Teaneck High School. Her father, Reginald Lawrence, was a sports official in New Jersey.
College and Continued Training
In 2002, Lawrence graduated with honors from Princeton University. She studied two subjects: political science and African-American studies. While at Princeton, she was a member of the university's fencing team.
She was chosen as an All-American. This honor is given to top college athletes in the United States. She also earned Ivy League honors during all four years she attended Princeton. The Ivy League is a group of eight famous universities in the northeastern United States. While at Princeton and after graduating, her coach was Michel Sebastiani.
In 2007, she earned a Master's degree. This was in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. She got this degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Even while studying for her degree, she kept fencing.
Olympic Success
Lawrence competed for the United States Fencing Team at the 2012 London Olympics. She took part in two events: individual épée and team épée. The épée is one of the three types of swords used in fencing.
She helped her team win a bronze medal in the women's team épée. Her teammates were Courtney Hurley, Kelley Hurley, and Susie Scanlan. This was a big achievement for the team and for Maya Lawrence.
