The Casa Consistorial De Mayagüez, also called the Alcaldía de Mayagüez, is the City Hall for the town of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. A City Hall is where local government leaders work. This important building stands right in front of the Colón Main Square. It faces the beautiful Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Cathedral.
History of Mayagüez City Hall
The very first City Hall building in Mayagüez was built in 1845. This original building held many important offices. It had the town's offices, a jail, a telegraph station, and even a place for the guard corps.
Sadly, this first building was destroyed by a big natural disaster. The earthquake of 1918 caused a lot of damage. After the earthquake, a new City Hall was needed.
Building the Current City Hall
The City Hall you see today was built in 1926. Its main entrance is very grand, with a large portico. A portico is a porch-like structure with columns, leading to the entrance of a building. The building also has a tall tower with a clock.
The outside of the building, called the facade, is designed in the Neoclassical style. This style is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman buildings. You can see this in its beautiful Corinthian capitals and Greco-Roman columns. Corinthian capitals are fancy tops of columns, decorated with carved leaves.
The architects for this building were Carmoega and Ing. Font Jiménez. Ignacio Flowers Lorenzo built it, and Adriano González was the contractor. The Mayor who ordered the new City Hall was Juan Rullán Rivera. A Mayor is the head of a city's government.
Inside, the building has a lot of space. The ceilings are very high, and the stairs are wide. This makes it easy for many people to move around. The rooms, offices, and other areas are large and filled with natural light.
