Early Life and Education

Mayen Adetiba was born in Nigeria in 1954. When she was younger, she first thought about becoming an accountant. Later, she became interested in journalism, which is about reporting news.

She moved to the United States for her university studies. It was a bit challenging because her parents could not send her money easily due to rules about sending money out of Nigeria. She briefly attended New York University. After that, she transferred to Columbia University to study electrical engineering. She then decided to switch to civil engineering. She was told that civil engineering skills would be very useful in Africa.

When she studied Civil Engineering at Columbia University, she was the only Nigerian student. She was also the only black girl in her class. After finishing her first degree, she went on to get her master's degree at Cornell University.

Mayen Adetiba married Dele Adetiba. Their daughter, Kemi Adetiba, was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in January 1980. Kemi is also a well-known person in Nigeria.

Career and Achievements

Mayen Adetiba has had a very successful career. She was elected as the President of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Nigeria. This is a big achievement for an engineer. She also served as the vice-president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers three times. She was the first woman ever to be chosen for the executive committee of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. This shows how important and respected she is in her field.

Her engineering work includes some major projects. She worked on the African Union Southern Africa Regional Office, which is located in Malawi. She also worked on the large Summerhill Baptist Church in Lagos. She did the work for the church pro bono, which means she did it for free to help the community.
