The Maywood Historic District is a special neighborhood in Arlington County, Virginia. It's a place where many old and interesting homes are protected because of their history. This district has almost 200 important buildings that show how people lived and built homes a long time ago.

Exploring the Maywood Historic District

The Maywood area was planned out and divided into five parts between 1909 and 1913. This happened after a train line, the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad, started running in 1906. Most of the homes in Maywood were built between 1909 and 1929.

Homes with Character

The houses in Maywood show off many different building styles. You can see homes built in the Queen Anne style, which often have towers and decorative details. There are also Colonial Revival homes, which look like older American houses.

Other popular styles include foursquares, which are usually square-shaped with four main rooms. You can also find Bungalow homes, known for their cozy, craft-style look. Many two-story gable-front houses are also part of the neighborhood. Some homes in Maywood were even ordered from catalogs and built from kits! These are called prefabricated mail-order houses.

Protecting Maywood's History

The local government in Arlington County decided to protect Maywood as a local historic district. This happened on July 7, 1990. Later, the National Park Service added the neighborhood to the National Register of Historic Places. This national list helps recognize and protect important historical places across the United States. Maywood was added to this list on May 22, 2003.
