Mbocayaty (in Guaraní: Mbokajaty) is a town in the Guairá Department of Paraguay. It is located about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Villarrica. It is also about 166 kilometers (103 miles) east of Asunción, the capital city.
The town was first known as Capilla Duarte, which means Duarte Chapel in Spanish. This name came from a Catholic chapel built there in the 1800s by a family named Duarte. The current name, Mbocayaty, comes from the Guarani language. It combines Mbokaja (macaw palm) and ty (land with many). So, Mbocayaty means "land with many macaw palms."
History of Mbocayaty
Mbocayaty was founded because of a land gift. A Catholic priest named Jose Mariano Duarte donated the land. Jose Mariano was likely the first priest and maybe even the first school teacher in the area. He had received the land from his father, General Carlos Duarte. The Duarte family originally came from Villarrica.
In 1903, Mbocayaty became its own municipality. This meant it could govern itself, separate from Villarrica. The first leader of its local government board was Juan de la Cruz Talavera.
During the Paraguayan War, many women living in what is now Mbocayaty helped the war effort. They donated their jewelry to support the soldiers. Also, several local families gave some of their farm animals to feed the soldiers. Over time, parts of Mbocayaty's original land were used to create new towns. These include Natalicio (in 1931), Independencia (in 1955), and Bottrell (in 1983).
Geography and Rivers
Mbocayaty gets its water from the Tebicuarymi River. Smaller streams, like Ita, Yaguarete, and Gervasia, also flow into it. The town borders Bottrell to the north, with the Tebicuarymi River forming the boundary. To the south, it borders Villarrica, separated by a stream called Bobo. The towns of Natalicio and Independencia are to the east. To the west, Mbocayaty borders the town of Yataity.
