McCoy is a small place in Atascosa County, Texas. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own city government. It is part of the larger San Antonio area. In 2000, about 30 people lived in McCoy.

History

McCoy was named after a local rancher, W.A. McCoy. He bought land in 1913 for a new train line. This line was for the San Antonio, Uvalde, and Gulf Railroad.

A post office opened in McCoy the very next year, in 1914. At that time, about 70 people lived there. By 1933, McCoy had one business. In 1952, it had a train station, a general store, and a few homes.

The community grew a bit over time. In 1970, there were three businesses. By 1987, some people in McCoy were growing peanuts on farms. The number of people living there stayed around 25 from 1945 until the early 1990s. In 1992, McCoy had ten businesses. By 2000, its population was 30.

Even though McCoy doesn't have its own city government, it still has a post office. Its ZIP code is 78113.

Geography

McCoy is located in the eastern part of Atascosa County. It is found along Farm to Market Road 541. The Missouri Pacific Railroad line also runs through it.

McCoy is about 8 mi (13 km) north of Campbellton. It is also about 18 mi (29 km) southeast of Pleasanton.

Education

In 1920, McCoy had a school with two classrooms. By 1935, the school added two more classrooms. It had 173 students and five teachers.

The school closed in 1950. Its students then joined the schools in Leal. The old school building was still there in 1952. Today, students in McCoy go to schools in the Pleasanton Independent School District.

Notable person

  • W. Page Keeton was a famous person from McCoy. He was an attorney, which is a type of lawyer. He also became the dean of the University of Texas School of Law.
