McCracken was started in 1886. This happened when the railroad tracks were built to reach this spot. The city was named after J.K. McCracken. He was a person who worked for the railroad company.

Part of the movie Paper Moon was filmed near McCracken in 1973. Some of the buildings used in the movie, like a hotel and a cafe, are no longer there. Today, those spots are empty lots.
