McCrae House is a special museum in Guelph, Ontario. It is the house where John McCrae was born in 1872. John McCrae was a doctor and soldier. He is famous for writing the poem "In Flanders Fields" during the First World War. This house is now a National Historic Site of Canada. This means it is a very important place in Canadian history.

History of McCrae House

This small house was built in 1858. It is made of limestone. The McCrae family lived here from 1870 to 1873. After they moved, other families lived in the house for many years.

Saving the House

In 1966, a group of people from Guelph bought the house. They wanted to save it and turn it into a museum. They created a group called the Lt. Col. John McCrae Birthplace Society. This group worked hard to raise money to fix up the house.

National Recognition

The Canadian government, through the Historic Sites and Monuments Board, recognized John McCrae as a very important person. They also said that McCrae House was a very important place for Canada. The house is also protected under the Ontario Heritage Act. This law helps protect important historical buildings in Ontario.

McCrae House Today

In 1983, the City of Guelph took over running the museum. It became part of Guelph Museums, along with the Guelph Civic Museum. The Guelph Civic Museum is also a protected heritage site.

A special memorial for Colonel John McCrae was opened on October 5, 1963. His friend, Colonel Lawrence Moore Cosgrave, was there to open it.

What to See and Do at McCrae House

McCrae House has different exhibits that show what John McCrae's life was like. They also show what life was like in the 1800s. The museum often has new themes each year.

During the summer, McCrae House has many fun activities. These include the Poppy Push, Canada Day celebrations, and a Teddy Bear Picnic. They also have a History Camp where kids can learn about the past. Sometimes, they even have special teas in the garden.

The Award-Winning Garden

Volunteers work hard to take care of the garden at McCrae House. They have made it look like a garden from the mid-to-late 1800s. This beautiful garden has even won awards!

Backyard Theatre

Guelph Museums sometimes hosts plays in the backyard of McCrae House. These plays often have stories connected to John McCrae or the time he lived in. For example, some shows have been about McCrae's life or love stories from World War I.
