The McGlashan-Nickerson House is a special old home located in Red Beach, Maine. This village is part of the larger town of Calais, Maine. Built around 1883, it's a great example of Italianate architecture. This style was popular in the late 1800s and often features fancy details and wide eaves.

The house was originally built for George McGlashan. He was one of the main people who owned the Maine Red Granite Quarry Company. Today, the house is owned by the National Park Service. It helps support the nearby St. Croix Island International Historic Site. Because of its history and unique style, the McGlashan-Nickerson House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

What Does the McGlashan-Nickerson House Look Like?

The McGlashan-Nickerson House sits on a small hill. From here, it looks out over Red Beach Cove. This cove is part of the St. Croix River, which has tides that go in and out. Next to the house is the land part of the St. Croix Island International Historic Site. Also nearby is the Joshua Pettegrove House, which has a Gothic Revival style.

The McGlashan House is a large, two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and has a rectangular main part with a hip roof. The outside is covered with clapboard siding. A long, two-story section extends from the main house, connecting it to a carriage house.

The front of the main house has three sections. The middle section has a fancy entrance with side windows and a window above the door. There are also decorative columns and a small gable. To the left of the entrance, there's a window bay that sticks out. The house has decorative brackets under its roof edges. There is also a porch along part of the long section, supported by posts with brackets.

Who Built and Lived in This Historic Home?

The McGlashan-Nickerson House was built around 1883. Its first owner was George McGlashan. He was an immigrant from Scotland. George McGlashan was a co-owner of the Maine Red Granite Quarry Company. This company was one of two big businesses that operated in Red Beach Cove. Sadly, the buildings from these companies no longer exist today.

From Quarry Owner to National Park Service

George McGlashan passed away in 1888. After his death, his wife sold the house to Samuel Nickerson. The Nickerson family owned the property for a long time, until 1985.

Today, the National Park Service owns the house. It is used to provide housing and other support for the nearby historic site. This means the house continues to play an important role in preserving history.
