Meadowood Mall is a large, one-level shopping center in Reno, Nevada. It covers about 901,357 square feet. This mall is managed by Simon Property Group, which owns half of it. Meadowood Mall has 125 different shops and places to eat. It is home to big stores like Macy's (with two separate locations), JCPenney, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

History of Meadowood Mall

Meadowood Mall first opened its doors in 1978. Back then, its main stores were JCPenney, Liberty House, and Macy's. In 1983, Liberty House closed down. A new Macy's store, called Macy's South, moved into that spot the next year.

In 1989, the mall added a fourth main store called Copeland's Sporting Goods. A big expansion happened in 1995. This added Sears as a fifth main store. It also brought more shops and a new food court called the Palms Food Court.

After Copeland's Sporting Goods went out of business in 1996, its store became a Sports Authority. However, this Sports Authority store closed in 2011 because there was another one very close by.

The mall got a fresh new look and added more shops in 2013. In 2016, Dick's Sporting Goods opened in a brand new building. The Sears store at Meadowood Mall closed in July 2018. Now, part of the old Sears space will become Round One Entertainment, a fun place with games and entertainment.

1995 Expansion Details

In 1995, Meadowood Mall grew bigger. At that time, another nearby mall, Park Lane Mall, was having trouble. The company that owned Meadowood Mall, Taubman Company, helped some stores from Park Lane Mall move to Meadowood.

The biggest new addition was Sears. It built a two-story store at the north end of the mall. A new hallway and several new shops led to this big new store. This expansion also created space for the Palms Food Court, which could hold 12 different places to eat.

Mall Modernization in 2013

By 2013, new shopping centers had opened in the Reno area. To stay a top shopping spot, Meadowood Mall planned a $3.5 million update. This renovation aimed to bring in new stores and restaurants. It also gave the mall a modern look, replacing its 1970s style. More seating areas and phone charging stations were added for shoppers.

The renovation brought exciting new stores. These included Vans, Pink by Victoria's Secret, and Forever 21. Many existing stores also moved to bigger or newly updated spots closer to the center of the mall or the food court. For example, the new Forever 21 store took over the space of three older stores. Other stores like Champs Sports and Spencer's moved to new spots to make room for a new H&M store. The renovation also improved restrooms and added a private nursing area for mothers.

Mall Layout

Meadowood Mall has a special semicircular shape. A straight path leads to the Round One entertainment area. The large food court, called the Palms, is also found near Round One. Many of the shops between the main stores are fancy. You can find many health and beauty stores and high-end clothing shops. There is also a restaurant and a small casino near some of the mall entrances.

Main Stores (Anchors)

Anchor stores are the biggest stores in a mall. They help attract shoppers. Here are the main stores at Meadowood Mall:

  • JCPenney (148,800 sq ft.) opened in 1978.
  • Macy's Men's and Home (98,700 sq ft.) opened in 1984.
  • Macy's Women's and Children's (165,500 sq ft.) opened in 1978.
  • Dick's Sporting Goods (50,000 sq ft.) opened in 2016.

Past Main Stores

  • Liberty House (1978-1983): This store closed when its company stopped operating on the mainland.
  • Copeland's/Sports Authority (1989-2011): It became Sports Authority in 1996 and closed in 2011.
  • Sears (1995-2018): This store closed in July 2018.

Places to Eat

The mall's food court, the Palms, has 12 different fast food places. You can choose from many types of food. Options include typical American food, Italian dishes, and Asian meals. You can also find sandwiches and desserts.

Outside the food court, there are five other places for drinks and snacks. There is also one full-service restaurant, The Cheesecake Factory, where you can sit down and enjoy a meal.
