Where Did the Name Mecan Come From?
The town of Mecan gets its name from the Mecan River. The name "Mecan" comes from an older word, "Namayicun." This word is from one of the Algonquian languages, which are spoken by many Native American groups. "Namayicun" means "Sturgeoning Grounds," referring to places where Sturgeon fish are found.
Another idea is that the name comes from the Ojibwe language word miikana, which means "road." So, the name might mean "sturgeon fishing spots" or "road."
