Mechanicstown was started a long time ago, in 1836. A person named Thomas McGavern planned out the community. He decided where the streets and buildings would go.
The community was first called "Mechanicsburgh." But on March 21, 1837, the state government of Ohio, called the Ohio General Assembly, changed its name. They approved the new name, "Mechanicstown," which it still has today.
A local school, Willis Elementary, was located near Mechanicstown. It was part of the Carrollton Exempted Village School District. This school closed down in 2008.
