The Media Armory is an old building in Media, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1908. This building was once a special place for the Pennsylvania National Guard. It served as a training center for a group called Company H of the 6th Infantry Regiment.
The Armory's Story
The building was designed by Price & McLanahan in 1908. It has two stories and a basement. The armory was built mostly from strong stone and steel. Its design looked like a fort. It had thick walls, jagged tops, and small towers. This design showed it was meant for military use.
Company H was a group of soldiers who trained here. They served in different wars. They were part of the Mexican Border Expedition. Later, they fought in World War I in France. They were then called Company H, 111th Infantry, 28th Infantry Division. In World War II, they were known as Company M and fought in the South Pacific.
The Media Armory is a very important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1989. This means it is recognized as a place worth protecting.
Modern Use of the Building
In 2004, the entire building was updated and fixed up. The top floor was changed into shops. Today, a grocery store called Trader Joe's is located there. Solar panels were also put on the roof during this renovation. These panels help create clean energy for the building.
Pennsylvania Veterans Museum
The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum opened in 2005. It is located in the basement of the Media Armory. This museum honors people who served in the military. It opened on Veterans Day.
The museum has many interesting things to see. You can find models of famous battles. These include the D-Day invasion and the Korean War. There is also a small movie theater. Visitors can see old military uniforms and weapons. The museum also displays photographs and stories from veterans. These stories are told by the veterans themselves.
