MediaCorp Channel 5, often called Channel 5, is a TV channel in Singapore. It broadcasts programs in English all day, every day. It's a "free-to-air" channel, which means you don't need to pay extra to watch it.
Channel 5 shows many different kinds of programs. You can watch English dramas, both from other countries and made in Singapore. It also features movies, sports events, reality shows, variety shows, news, and game shows. Some popular shows, like Singapore Idol and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, have even had special Singapore versions made for Channel 5.

Channel 5's History
Channel 5 has been around for a long time, starting way back in 1963. It has changed its name a few times over the years.
Early Days of Television
The channel first launched on February 15, 1963, as Television Singapura. This was Singapore's very first TV channel! Just a couple of months later, on April 2, 1963, its name changed to Saluran 5 Television Singapura.
Changes Over the Years
- From December 28, 1963, to August 9, 1965, it was known as Saluran 5 Television Malaysia (Singapura). This was when Singapore was part of Malaysia.
- After Singapore became independent on August 9, 1965, the channel became Radio Television Singapore Channel 5 (RTS-5). This name lasted until January 31, 1980.
- From February 1, 1980, to December 31, 1993, it was called Singapore Broadcasting Corporation Fifth Frequency/Channel 5 (SBC-5).
- Then, from January 1, 1994, to February 12, 2001, it was known as Television Corporation of Singapore Fifth Frequency/Channel 5 (TCS-5).
- Finally, after February 12, 2001, it became MediaCorp TV Channel 5, which is the name it uses today.
