The History of Medical Art

People have been drawing medical pictures and diagrams for hundreds of years. Early drawings looked different from today's art. This is because artists often drew what they thought was true. They didn't always draw exactly what they saw directly.

Modern Medical Illustration Begins

The job of a medical illustrator is more recent. In the late 1890s, a talented artist named Max Brödel came to America. He was from Leipzig, a city in Germany. Max Brödel started working at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

He drew pictures for famous doctors like Harvey Cushing and William Halstead. His drawings helped these doctors explain their medical discoveries.

Max Brödel's Innovations

Max Brödel also invented new ways to draw medical pictures. One famous method he created is called carbon dust. This technique helped make very detailed and clear images.

He also helped start the very first special department for medical illustration at a university. This department is still teaching new medical illustrators today.
