Megan Leigh Anderson is a famous Australian netball player. She used to play for the Australian national team. After a great career, she stopped playing in 2011. Now, she is a coach for the Queensland Firebirds netball team.

Early Netball Days

Megan Anderson started playing netball when she was 8 years old. She joined the St John the Baptist netball club in Woy Woy. Her mom was an umpire, which got her interested in the sport.

Most of Megan's early games were with the Woy Woy Peninsula Netball Association. She played at the Lemon Grove Park netball courts in Ettalong Beach.

Megan was the first player to play in two big netball competitions at the same time. These were the National Bank Cup and the Commonwealth Bank Trophy.

Playing for Australia

Megan Anderson played for the Australian national team from 2000 to 2006. It was tough to keep her spot on the team in 2001 and 2004.

She went to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Her team won a silver medal, losing to New Zealand in the final. Megan also traveled with the team to New Zealand, Jamaica, England, and South Africa. She played 20 games for Australia.

Club Career Highlights

Megan played for several teams during her professional career.

Commonwealth Bank Trophy Teams

  • She played for the Adelaide Ravens from 1997 to 1998.
  • Then, she joined the Sydney Swifts from 1999 to 2007.

National Bank Cup Team

  • Megan also spent two years playing in New Zealand. She played for the Northern Force in the National Bank Cup.

ANZ Championship Teams

When the new ANZ Championship started, Megan joined the Southern Steel in New Zealand for the 2008 season. The Steel wanted her back for 2009, but she was not allowed to play by Netball New Zealand.

Megan then signed with the Queensland Firebirds. However, she had to leave the team before the season started because of work.

In June 2009, Megan was given special permission to rejoin the Southern Steel. She filled in for a player who was pregnant. She returned to the Southern Steel again in 2010 after playing well with the World 7 team.

For the 2011 ANZ Championship season, Megan signed with the Northern Mystics. She wanted to stay with the Southern Steel, but she could not get New Zealand residency. This move happened because the Steel signed another player, which meant they would have too many international players.

Awards and Coaching

On July 14, 2000, Megan was given the Australian Sports Medal. This award recognized her achievements in netball.

Megan stopped playing for the ANZ Championship and the Northern Mystics at the end of the 2011 season. After retiring as a player, she stayed with the Mystics as a special coach.

Megan is currently the Assistant coach for the NSW Swifts in the ANZ Championship. In 2015, she received the Elite Coaching Accreditation for her coaching success.
